A Couple Poems
by Jen "Erect Joy" Monknun

Hi, my name is Jackie Sullivan , I am a historian of Victorian verse for children, Nursery rhymes, play time songs shouted amongst children. One day on the way to my day job at the factory, I stumbled upon a lonely house on the block while I took an unusual shortcut. It was tall and as I was almost walked by I saw a twinkle coming from one of the dark doorways. It was a little girl wearing a strange outfit and her eyes were glistening as she beckoned me to her. She handed me a dusty book and winked before she dissolved into a brown mist in front of me. Surprisingly the book remained in my hands. I opened the book and looked inside it, there was a big puff of dust in my face when I turned a page.

Here was the first tune that availed itself to me in that great book:

Little Donky

~

Giddy up Giddy up Giddy up little donky

Giddy up Giddy up Giddy yup

Giddy up Giddy up Giddy up little donky

E-Yup , e-Yup, e Yup!

My little donky went down to the pond

A little bit chunky a little bit round

He looked at me bashful he looked at me nice

He begged me "dear misstress, do cut off a slice!"

Giddy up Giddy up Giddy up little donky

Giddy up Giddy up Giddy yup

Giddy up Giddy up Giddy up little dinky

A-one, a-Two, a-Three!

My little donky went down to the zoo

The lions and bears let out a drool

The meat they smelled they wanted

Was riding in on four cloven feet.

Giddy up Giddy up Giddy up little donky,

Giddy up Giddy up Giddy yup

Giddy up Giddy Giddy up little donky

My shoe, copper flue, Tood A Loo.

My little donky

Three pints to Charlie

My little donky

Giddy up Giddy up Giddy up little donky

Giddy up Giddy up Giddy up

Giddy up Giddy up Giddy up little donky.

There wasn't much else on that page except for curious little drawings decorating it. The text itself was written in a calligraphic period hand and on the page was a drawing of a little person holding a scroll.

I turned the page and almost sneezed as a cloud of dust creaked out of the page. The next thing I saw was a dusty page with another children's verse on it. I think it was sang as the kids played with their stick and wheels, and ran around in the dirt. It was called,

Don't Be A Sinner

~

Patty Cake Patty Cake

All the live long day

Whistle play and pray

And For God's Sake

Don't Be A Sinner!
~

I'm not very religious and the song and illustration on the page were not very interesting to me so I started to flip through all the pages haphazardly. My mind began to wander. Quickly I realized my error when a bolt of electricity ran right through me, through the book, and through my feet! Then the book jumped out of my hands and the air turned all electric around it with lightning and a loud buzz. Then the book started flipping through all by itself and I really feared for my life from all that supernatural presence! Then everything calmed down and the book stopped floating and it had flipped to a page somewhere in the middle. I smiled as I realized this song was a real antique, it was a real artifact of a by-gone time..

One Potato Two Potato

One Potato Two Potato

Three potato Four

Five Potato Six Potato

Seven potato, More.

I smiled as mist surrounded me and I dissolved into dust. I realized I was really already dead just like the children the rhymes were weaved for and I smelled the carrot cake Mommy had in the oven. My Favorite.
