The Teenage Dreams Of Lauren Hamami (May 2015)
by Lauren Hamami
Dreamt that I was in a helicopter, flying over Washington, DC. The pilot was very cynical; I was in awe of our perspective up there and he was just "used to it"..."Doing his job"... The proportions were all out of whack down on the ground below; some people were taller than buildings and trees were all different sizes. I asked "is this a kid's world?" The pilot didn't seem to hear my question and instead said "to your left we have a Forbes mansion." He flew over it and I remember working there, doing chores as a child and exploring the secret rooms and workshop of the man of the house. I remember swimming in that familiar pool with Luke after we both had a long day of work. I remembered the pieces of furniture in there that my dad had built for them. Then, I was inside again, and invisibly watching a 21 year old Asian American who was bragging to the husband of the house about her old hardware collection. You could tell the husband was thinking of when he could have sex with her. The wife calmly touched his shoulder as she came down the stairs he was standing on. He turned around and the two hugged in silence with their eyes closed. It was if their love had been reset or refreshed. The Asian American girl got back to work.
